Cesar Nader: Master the Process and Gain Success!

Master the process of building a successful business with Cesar Nader!

BACKGROUND

Cesar Nader is a retired U.S. Marine who served the country for over 20 years.

During his service, he completed two combat tours and graduated from three undergraduate majors, two minors, two master’s programs, and studied Chinese and French.

After living abroad, he returned to the country in 2011 and built X Corp Solutions, providing professional services support including cybersecurity, counterintelligence, information technology, and training and education.

Apart from this, Nader is also the acting Director of the American Cyber League, the Executive Director of the Cyber Bytes Foundation, and an executive coach teaching businesses in mastering the process and gaining success.

“We never think of what we do as a money-making proposition, but rather as a fulfilling thing that will permeate and create ripple effects for others. So, we thrive on the success of others.”

BUILDING X CORP SOLUTIONS

When Cesar Nader retired from the Marines, he built his company, X Corp Solutions, with the goal of doing something greater while also making sure that it can sustain her five children.

During that time, Nader became interested in real estate and in that process, he also learned about government contracting. He was then inspired by a mentor who also got out of the Marines, built a company, and hired his fellow veterans.

At first, he modeled his company on Booz Allen, but he realized that these two companies were not really in the same category; so, he researched and persevered and found that he needed to master and improve the process.

“You take these components and you build it together more efficiently, and then your success in how you exceed expectations. And so you start cranking the engine. So, for me, it was learning the process, mastering it, then making (it) more efficient, and then hitting it again and again, and just going after it in a more efficient, with more partners, more robust pipeline, you name it, right?”

GOAL OF AMERICAN CYBER LEAGUE

Through the Cyber Bytes Foundation, Nader also built a Cyber Security Center of Excellence in Stafford, Virginia.

With the use of this cyber ecosystem, they can help train people and provide a place for individuals to build their own technology.

Apart from this, they can also be a member of the American Cyber League wherein they, together with other companies, address research and innovation issues within their industries.

“It’s essentially a place for any company to come… We will help you. No cost, no expectation of payment. We want to bring the solutions to the government and let the government pay for those solutions and fund the projects.”

THE KEY TO THEIR SUCCESS

In building and managing his business, Nader also faced a handful of hardships and problems with other individuals whom he trusted. However, he continues to believe that the sun will always come out.

“We never stay in the Valley of the shadows. And if you are willing to just keep walking in either direction, at some point, the terrain starts to go up, no matter how low you think you’ll go, it starts to go up. But if you stop in sulk and suffer and ask yourself, Oh my God, where am I? What am I going to do? You’re going to just get stuck. And you’re going to camp out in the Valley of the shadows. And then you can become a nomad in the Valley of shadows.”

Aside from that, he continuously masters the process and becomes efficient at what he does. He was not the number one but he managed to be on the top.

“It’s like, listen, if I did it, you can too, it’s just follow the process, become disciplined, obsessed with it. And once you master it, find ways to make it more efficient. There lies the real success, because when you make it more efficient, you have something you can sell better than your competitors.”

Ultimately, he knows how to ensure that he does what he should do as the leader of his company, as well as be an inspiration for other people.

“You may make yourself a CEO at the beginning, but you will only remain a CEO if you’re able to solve those problems that people expect you to solve, because that is your most important job to take care of your people and make sure that the company is there for them to continue.”

ADVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

1. Master the process.

You can’t grow your business when you don’t even know the process, deal with it in the right manner, and create an efficient pipeline out of it.

“A lot of people think that you got to where you did by just walking around aimlessly and you got lucky. ‘Oh, he got lucky because he’s got a great, look at his smile, that’s how I get business.’ Or, ‘He got lucky because she came from the right school.’ You learn the process, mastered it, improved it, and then work on making it, you know, exceed expectations.”

2. Respond to RFIs.

A request for information or sources sought notice may not get you a contract award but it will get you into the game.

And if you’re persistent and consistent, you will continue to become one of those thoughts in their mind.

3. Don’t be afraid of rejections.

You’ll be in so much pain when you receive your first rejection, but, instead of crying over it, you should use it as a motivation to focus on your first win.

“To me, rejection is a joy because we know that the more we get the closer we are to a win. If you’re afraid of rejection, you already started on the wrong path. It’s like, I, and I say this to everybody, don’t focus on success, focus on rejection, because if you’re okay with rejection, you will be less sensitive to the no.”

4. Have a positive mindset.

There will always be challenges. regardless if you’re still on your way up or you’re already on the top. What makes the differences is how you look at it.

5. Ask tough questions.

Get off the sidelines and don’t be afraid to ask, regardless of how many questions you have, because by the time your questions are answered, you become an expert in the process.

“The only thing you can do is make those camels drink the water because you essentially have the well to them. You brought the well filled with water, unless you beat them with salt so they can get thirsty, these camels are not going to drink the water.”

6. Help others succeed.

All of us want success but don’t try to focus on the steps that you’re taking, but on the people that you meet along the way because in the end, you’re not going to be counting dollars but counting relationships.

“The success that you build is based on what you just saw here, a chemistry shared by a passion to help others. So, try to do the same. And if you are successful, remember one thing and that is to help someone else, reach down, grab a hold and pick them up and get them gone.”

Making a Giant with Maria and Alex Omeke. Applying your knowledge to the real world: A cab driver’s son story of winning his first contract

Hey listeners, this is Eric! As some of you may know from listening to the last few week’s episodes we have a new podcast entitled Making A Giant. The show featured the students of GovCon EDU who recently won their first contract. It is a much different perspective from our traditional podcast format where we interview experts in contracting.

This show features everyday people who decided to take the plunge into the world of federal procurement and was successfully awarded with their very first contract. Many of my listeners had a difficult time identifying with the multi-million dollar business owners and wanted to hear from the person who is just starting out.

This week’s episode of Making A Giant I want you to meet Alex. Alex’ dad was a cab driver so he was part of running the operation by answering the house phone since he was a kid. He was contracted out by a big company that did I.T. stuff overseas where he started at the bottom, got a good mentor and was able to work himself to the top. Then he realize that he could do much better contracting and make money for himself so he did just that.

He is now in Hawaii doing what he did for others but for himself, meet today’s guest making a Giant with Alex Omeke.

Patricia Bonilla: Building a World-Class Construction Firm on Faith

Learn how to build a world-class construction firm through faith with Patricia Bonilla!

BACKGROUND

Growing up in Dominican Republic and being the eldest, Patricia Bonilla learned to be competitive. She joined different extracurricular activities such as swimming and ballet, and also helped her father with his business during summer or in her free time.

Meanwhile, after working in the City of Fort Lauderdale as the Head of Construction Division, she decided to build Lunacon Construction Group, a Miami-based company providing different construction services, in 2007.

Currently, Lunacon has a bonding capacity of $15M single and $50 aggregate, as well as catering more than 300 clients worldwide in their five office locations, in the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.

Apart from that, Bonilla has also been recognized as the 2014 SBA State of Florida Minority-Owned Small Business Person of the Year and in the Good to Great and ABC’s in Excellence, among others.

“I’m very competitive. I don’t think I’ve measured myself by somebody else’s actions. I think I compete with myself. I would say I’m probably a crazy visionary. I see things and I want to get them done.”

LUNACON CONSTRUCTION GROUP

When Patricia Bonilla quit her job, a handful of people, including her brother, thought that she was crazy and that she’s not ready. However, she did what she had to do.

“And you know what? It’s just the belief inside was stronger than any of those. The belief in what was possible was stronger than the fear that was trying, was being, that people was trying (to impose on me).”

And because they’re mainly a start-up, she had to invest her time and money in marketing and networking, even though her partner was doubting the results of these activities. She just put everything into faith and waited for something to come.

“I was proactive in the sense that I was traveling everywhere I could possibly go, to learn about it, to expose the company, brand the company with the federal government.”

Then, when she’s on the verge of giving up, a blessing comes in. Someone she had worked before called her for a  $23 million job.

“If we believe something is coming, what we need to be doing is not retreating from the direction we think we’re going to go, but to prepare for the floodgate to be able to receive what’s coming.”

However, building and managing Lunacon was not that easy. The only thing that helped her is being true with her words and that people believed in Lunacon’s story of a company that started in a garage.

“And I believe people can see the transparency of the words. Sometimes, I think they can see through to the soul. So again, that doesn’t mean that we have not made a lot of mistakes. I have. And I’ve learned a lot.”

ADVICE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

1. Believe in yourself.

Regardless if you are native to this country or not, you can do what Patricia Bonilla did. The only thing that you need is to believe in yourself and everything that you want to happen will happen.

“If you were willing to work and work hard, because I think you have to work, go through the process, and be honest to the process, you can get to wherever you want to be. Everyone, including those that don’t look like you, will give you a chance if you have that desire. But just believe that you can do it. That’s the only job we have. Believe it!”

2. Learn to network yourself.

If you are not willing to take time and effort in communicating with other people in your industry, they will never know about you and your capabilities.

Besides, even when you don’t get a contract, this is a way for you to build relationships and be with people who understand what you do

“Every time I go or support any of these institutions, I end up receiving a lot from the people I meet there. It’s a gathering for networking and I cannot tell you enough about networking. Even if you don’t get a contract when you go to a networking, you tend to meet people that are amazing. You know, some of them become really good friends of yours. You may not engage into a transactional relationship, but the gains are far beyond.”

3. Prove your capabilities.

There might be a small number of women who build businesses but that doesn’t mean that men are at fault. It’s just that we need to catch up and be a motivation to other women.

“Nobody’s responsible for your growth, but yourself.”

5. Hire diverse talents.

Not because you’re a Cuban-owned small business, then you will only hire employees that are Cuban. The same also goes with a company whose employees are all white.

You should consider that talent is something that is not specific for one race, it comes from everywhere. And that’s the reason why big corporations hire diverse talent.

“You are preventing yourself from understanding other points of view, from bringing innovation from another side of the world that you might, you might be, what are you missing by not having a company that is diverse and includes all.”

082: Melissa Burant – The free government resource that all small businesses should use, PTAC

For the first time ever we are interviewing someone from APTAC (Association of Pocurement Technical Assistance Centers).

If you have never heard of APTAC or PTAC for short, the non-organization has offices around the country in every state that provide free and low cost training and technical assistance for small businesses. They host workshops and matchmaking events, offer one-on-one counseling and can provide you with resources to reach federal, state and local government agencies. My recommendation is that every small business owner should at the very least try and get acquainted with their local PTAC. If not for the fact that the organization is funded bytax payers, so to do a free consultation is a no brainer.

Our guest today, Melissa Burant is a Government Contracting Specialist with the Iowa Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) serving clients in Scott and Clinton counties. Before working at PTAC Melissa served as a federal contracting officer at the Army Contracting Command, Rock Island, and has more than 15 years of federal service.

In this episode she shares:

▪how to help small businesses avoid pitfalls

▪some of the service offered by PTAC

▪small business horror story and more
